Pieces for online sessions: 6. 'Suffer a Sea Change' mvts. 1, 4, 5'

The latency issues experienced with most current group online internet sessions makes a lot of music difficult to deal with because of the time delays involved. This piece, composed in 2011, should be suitable for online group rehearsals where it is not necessary to play in time with each other.

The score is available for download from MusicaNeo.

This is the last of the pieces described for online sessions. All the posts are in the Blog section.

'Suffer a Sea Change' is for a flexibly scored ensemble of instruments. Voices and percussion are optional. The music is written with both treble and bass clef presented and players use their preferred clef in each of the movements. In a mixed ensemble transposing instruments should transpose. It is allowable for bass clef players/singers to sound an octave higher than written. If a very large ensemble is playing all the movements the ensemble/musical director may orchestrate each movement according to the forces that are available. Other guidance is given with each of the movements. Optional percussion instruments: up to 6 large glass bottles, tam tam, bass drum, piano, vibraphone, up to 3 cymbals, up to 6 wine glasses, woodblock, up to 6 whirlies. The title ‘Suffer a Sea-change’ comes from Ariel’s song in Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’. The titles of the six movements reflect different types of marine pollution, ranging from the wreckage of a ship or its cargo to litter that is accumulating in the major oceanic gyres. The titles are: Flotsam, Jetsam, Derelict, Lagan, Spill, and Gyre.

First performed by CoMA East Midlands Ensemble, Director Antony Clare, 20 July 2019.

Final suggestion for a piece by another composer suitable for online sessions: Louis Andriessen 'Je vois une ortie dans l’herbe’
